Will AI take your job?

A machine will always remain a machine, that is to say a tool to help the player work and prepare. Never shall I be beaten by a machine! Never will a program be invented which surpasses human intelligence. And when I say intelligence, I also mean intuition and imagination. Can you see a machine writing a novel or poetry? Better still, can you imagine a machine conducting this interview instead of you? With me replying to its questions?

Life Is Interesting!

Twenty years ago software engineer was a dream job β€” highly respected, highly paid.
Ten years ago it was super cool to be a data scientist, despite nobody knowing exactly what that means. Three years ago everybody started speaking about Prompt Engineering, as if it's the profession of the future.

But the brutal reality is that all of these professions are dying.
Not today. And probably not in the next year. But they are.

And the reason is that coding LLMs are getting better and better at an enormous speed. And there is a very simple explanation for that:

  • Companies like Anthropic double down on coding LLMs, because better coding LLMs accelerate the development of even better coding LLMs
  • Evaluating code is fairly simple β€” much easier than evaluating the quality of a poem.

What does this mean? Well, for me it's pretty obvious that LLMs will be able to write code of any complexity that a human software engineer writes now. Even the best engineers. Even the hardest tasks.

People who don't agree with that remind me of Garry Kasparov who said "Never shall I be beaten by a machine!" β€” eight years before Deep Blue beat him in 1997. So remember, even the smartest of us make mistakes! Especially when it comes to predicting the future.

Furthermore, the more skilled the software engineer is, the more vulnerable he/she is β€” because they tend to be so sure of their uniqueness and irreplaceability that they usually start adopting AI much later.

So, will AI take your job?
Of course! :)

And I think the better questions are:
What should I do to be alive by that time?
What would I do with all the free time if I don't have to work anymore?

Good luck!
